Thoughts on the Feast of the Epiphany

If home and security and predictability had been enough,

if the bright stars of power, prestige, riches had been enough,

if pleasure had been enough,

if all this had managed to suffocate the spirit, soothe the restlessness, quiet the inner voice that insisted there must be more to life,

if the risks had seemed too great, the price too high, the journey too hard,

if they had followed any of those other stars,

they would have stayed home;

the journey would not have been made,

they would not have found the Christ,

their hearts would not have been changed,

they would not have been willing to go in another direction,

they would have lived without ever discovering life’s meaning;

they would not have been wise.
